Its structure has been described as an ‘architectural bagatelle’ - a mix of mock-Tudor and somewhat more colonial influences. This, though, is unsurprising given that the original house - built in 1840 - was largely remodelled at the turn of the century.
Originally a hunting and fishing lodge, during the early twentieth century the hotel became the only barium spa resort outside Germany. It may well have been this which attracted Kaiser Wilhelm II to Lake in 1912 – his mission, apparently, was simply to relax: something very little of Europe was able to do two years later.
