Bothwell
The Priory Country Lodge. Dating from 1848, this architecture of this beautiful Tasmanian house is somewhat “Tudorbethan” – indeed, it wouldn’t look at all out of place in the English Home Counties or the Scottish glens. Located in the Central Highlands, those looking for a base from which to tour the entire island by car could do a great deal worse than consider this. Mr & Mrs Smith
Campbell Town
Foxhunter’s Return. The National Trust of Australia say that this is one of the best hotel buildings of the late Colonial period in the whole of the country, let alone Tasmania. And for that we have to thank the convict labourers who constructed much of the place in the 1830’s. There are 8 rooms in all, some of which are within the original coach house outbuildings. TripAdvisor
Deloraine
Bowerbank Mill. Over a century and a half old, Bowerbank offers de facto heritage bed & breakfast accommodation amid the scenery of the Meander Valley. Tasmanian time-travelling it most certainly is. TripAdvisor
Peppers Calstock. Offering seven rooms and two suites, Peppers Calstock is a distinctly attractive Georgian country house. The towns of Devonport and Launceston are both within easy reach by car. HotelClub
Derwent Valley
Tynwald. Certainly one of the oldest places to stay anywhere in Australia, this imposing property dates from circa 1830. Built by “Free Settlers” from England, it today offers travellers six guest rooms (each individually named and furnished with antiques). Hobart is less than an hour away by car. TripAdvisor
Hawley Beach
Hawley House. A range of accommodation options are on offer here, including suites in the main house and stable block, as well as a self-contained “Vineyard Pavilion”. Much of the original building dates from 1878. TripAdvisor
Hobart
Gattonside Heritage Accommodation. A classic Victorian mansion dating from around 1885, Gattonside has been operating as a luxury B&B since 1999. It offers 8 suites in all. TripAdvisor
Grand Mercure Hadley’s Hotel. The building dates back to 1834 and is, as such, listed by the National Trust. Offering 71 rooms in all, it is situated in central Hobart. Expedia | LateRooms
Lenna of Hobart. A landmark of the city, this fine old building is inextricably linked to Hobart’s maritime past. Much of its accommodation is contained within a more contemporary wing. Booking.com | Expedia
Macquarie Manor. Carefully restored during the mid-1990’s, Macquarie Manor is rightly listed by the National Trust. It offers 18 rooms in total, including a four-poster suite. HotelClub
The Islington. Constructed in 1847, this popular boutique hotel blends the old and the new: Regency architecture combined with contemporary-themed guest rooms. Mr & Mrs Smith
The Lodge on Elizabeth. A Georgian mansion, this four-star rated hotel offers a total of 14 rooms. Parts of the building are said to have been built by convict labourers in 1829. LateRooms | Expedia
Huon Valley
Crabtree House. Dating from around 1840, Crabtree House offers the heritage-traveller self-contained accommodation in one of Tasmania’s most beautiful areas. Crabtree House
Launceston
City Park Grand Hotel. Unsurprisingly a listed building, this early-Victorian hotel is situated at the heart of Launceston’s Central Business District (CBD). Rooms are available both within the main building and its adjacent stable complex. Expedia
Colonial On Elizabeth. Built in 1847, this was once the Launceston Church Grammar School. The ‘Heritage Spa’ and ’Heritage Queen’ rooms are those within the original property. Booking.com
Quamby Estate. Its cellars were once the living quarters of convict labourers, but this beautiful country house is anything but austere. Built in the 1830’s, it has been described as a fine example of Anglo-Indian architecture. Be that as it may, it also happens to have its own 9-hole golf course of which club house even dates from the 1850’s (it was once the home and office of the Estate Manager). Mr & Mrs Smith
Quality Edenholme Grange. Of the Victorian era this might be (1881), but the architecture is also distinctly ‘Olde Australian’. Expedia
The Old Bakery Inn. Just what it says on the (baking) tin, the original shop building was constructed in the 1870’s by a former army soldier who was deported to Australia from England in 1838. It offers 24 rooms in all, and is located close to the centre of what is Australia’s third oldest city. Expedia
Longford
The Racecourse Inn. Situated around ten miles to the south of Launceston, Longford’s Racecourse Inn is an original Georgian coaching house. It boasts its own licensed restaurant and is, as one might expect, classified by the National Trust of Australia. TripAdvisor
Richmond
Quality Inn Prospect House. Every inch the colonial statement of presence, this Georgian house is said to have been constructed by 22 convict labourers who lived in the cellars below. It offers 12 guest rooms in all, with Hobart easily reached to the south west. Expedia
Ross
Man O' Ross Hotel. A sturdy sandstone building from the 1830’s, Man O’ Ross has been providing accommodation to Tasmanian travellers for over a century and a half. It offers 7 rooms in the main building, with a self-contained unit also available. TripAdvisor
Please get in touch if you believe we have missed a particular example of heritage accommodation in Australia. We are, of course, especially keen to learn of historic hotels, bed & breakfasts, or other places to stay in and around the major cities of Tasmania (most notably Launceston and Hobart). These should have retained as much of their historic character as possible. Featured hotels can be luxury, boutique or budget, but all should provide top class hospitality irrespective of their official classification.
