Marriott Wentworth by the Sea. New Castle. Opening for business in 1874, this landmark building underwent a colossal restoration having been listed as one of the “11 most endangered places” by the National Trust for Historic Places in 1996. Now returned to splendour, the hotel offers over 160 guest rooms and suites, many with harbour and ocean views. It was here in 1905 that the Treaty of Portsmouth was devised thereby ending the Russo-Japanese War. The talks were attended by many delegates from both nations, and were brought about by Theodore Roosevelt – actions which would win him the Nobel Peace Prize. Booking.com | Expedia

1875 Inn. Tilton. No prizes for guessing the year of construction, but potential guests might like to know that it was in 2001 that that this historic old building underwent a thorough restoration. It now features 11 en suite guest rooms, and is ideally located for those seeking to visit the beautiful Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Both Henry Ford and Thomas Edison chose to spend vacations here. TripAdvisor

Rosewood Country Inn. Bradford. Built in the mid-nineteenth century, Rosewood Country Inn is set in 12 acres of hilltop land and has been meticulously restored to its former glory since being purchased by the current owners in 1991. The hotel has a total of 11, very individual, guest rooms. New Hampshire it might be, but there’s certainly a Hollywood theme to the guest list: Charlie Chaplin, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford have all relaxed at the Rosewood. Maine

Admiral Peary House. Fryeburg. Providing accommodation on a bed & breakfast basis, this historic inn lies in seven acres of its own grounds. Built circa 1865, the house was once home to Robert E. Peary who claimed to have been the first explorer to reach the North Pole (April 6th, 1909). Expedia

Fairmont Copley Plaza. Boston. Boston has far more than its fair share of quality hotels, and this is most certainly one of them – its 383 guest rooms and suites have all been recently restored as part of a $34 million overhaul. Situated in the city’s historic Back Bay, the hotel is ideally located for both business and leisure travellers. It might not even have yet reached its centenary (it was built in 1912), but almost every US President since William Taft has stayed here. Expedia

The Red Maple Inn. Spencer. Unsurprisingly listed in the National Register of Historic Places, this 220-year-old building epitomises New England Colonial Architecture. It boasts six uniquely furnished rooms and, unusually, its own regular cookery school. It is said that George Washington attended a reception here during the first year of his Presidency (his second visit to the town). TripAdvisor

Cranwell Resort and Spa. Lenox. A number of buildings make up this highly-regarded spa, but history-enthusiasts will be most interested in staying in the Tudor-esque house built over a century ago. If you’ve heard the phrase “From here I can see the very hills of Heaven” then you’ll be interested to know that it relates to here. Henry Ward Beecher – brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe – bought the land where the mansion now stands in 1853; the views from the terrace are those which inspired his legendary phrase. Expedia

The Inn at Cape Cod. Yarmouth Port. In architectural terms, the inn is what might be described as “Greek Revival” and befitting of the man who paid great sums for its construction – but Joshua Sears was, after all, one of the richest people in Massachusetts. Built in 1820, the house eventually became an inn and stagecoach stop where several famous writers have sojourned. One of these is known to be the author of Civil Disobedience, Henry David Thoreau. TripAdvisor

Emerson Inn by the Sea. Rockport. The name gives it away: the inn’s most celebrated guest is Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is said that he found much inspiration in the local scenery. Dating back to the 1850’s, the hotel offers 36 guest rooms many of which benefit from ocean views. Expedia

Rhode Island

Hotel Viking. Newport. Benefiting from a recent multi-million dollar renovation, the Hotel Viking offers 209 guest rooms which combine old world charm with the conveniences modern travellers have come to expect. However, even the hotel’s original wing is a comparative youngster. Built in 1926 it’s one of the most recent to feature anywhere on Nights In The Past. But it’s still managed to attract more than its fair share of notable figures in its relatively short history. The Astors and Vanderbilts were two families associated with the hotel in its early days. Booking.com | Expedia

The Seth Warner Inn. Manchester. On four acres of private land, the Seth Warner Inn dates back more than 200 years. Built circa 1799, it continues to offer accommodation as it has throughout its existence, with 5 en suite guest rooms. It is said that numerous notable figures have rested here in the past, one of whom is known to be the son of Abraham Lincoln, Robert Todd Lincoln. TripAdvisor

The Inn at Ormsby Hill. Manchester Center. Built circa 1764, the Inn at Ormsby Hill is a restore manor house which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It offers 10 guest rooms and benefits from views of both Battenkill Valley and the Green Mountain landscape. Legend has it that one of the Revolutionary War’s most colourful figures, Ethan Allen, hid out in the building. It has also been visited by both presidents Taft and Grant, as well as Robert Todd Lincoln. The house also has the town’s original jail cell located in its basement. TripAdvisor

Echo Lake Inn. Ludlow. Originally built in 1840 as a summer hotel serving the Victorian gentry, Echo Lake Inn is one of very few rural Vermont inns operating on a year round basis. It offers 23 guest rooms (some with private Jacuzzis) and seven condos. President Calvin Coolidge was one former guest, as indeed were Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. Expedia

Green Mountain Inn. Stowe. Dating back to 1833, the Green Mountain Inn was originally a private residence that soon became a popular “summering place” for well-heeled New Englanders. Both its main building and adjacent depot building are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and offer 104 individually furnished guest rooms, fitness centre and year-round outdoor swimming pool. Former patrons include Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and, in the latter half of the twentieth century, Gerald Ford. Booking.com |  Expedia | Lastminute.com
