Dalhousie Castle. Bonyrigg. Some might well want to spend a night here in the hope of bumping into ‘Lady Catherine’. However, the aforementioned “Grey Lady” is only one of the apparitions to be found at Dalhousie Castle. Another ghost is supposedly that of Sir Alexander Ramsay (a former Laird of the estate who was starved to death at Hermitage Castle in Roxburghshire).

See our special history section for Dalhousie Castle
Borthwick Castle. North Middleton. This ancient fortress has an extraordinarily rich history, not least through its connections to Mary Queen of Scots. And, as befits somewhere so atmospheric, it is also reputed to be haunted – the Red Room and Great Hall in particular. Find out about the heritage of this extraordinary hotel at our specific page for Borthwick Castle

Aberdeenshire

Ardoe House Hotel. Aberdeen. This 19th century mansion just outside the city is reputed to be home to a female spirit some believe to be that of Katherine Ogston, the wife of a former owner. See Booking.com

Norwood Hall. Aberdeen. A classic Victorian mansion (but built upon the site of the medieval Pitfodels Castle), Norwood Hall is said to be the abode of the ghost of a former owner and his mistress. LateRooms.com

Argyll & Bute

Barcaldine Castle. Near Oban. On the banks of Loch Creran, this splendid 16th century house offers both highly-rated bed & breakfast accommodation and a slim chance of a meeting with a female ghost who is said to reside there. Read reviews courtesy of TripAdvisor

Dumfries and Galloway

Auchen Castle Hotel. Beattock. The original castle – now in ruins – lies alongside the hotel (built in 1849) where the ghost of a child has been seen both inside and within the grounds. TripAdvisor

Comlongon Castle. Clarencefield. A truly superb piece of Scottish heritage, this medieval stronghold near Gretna is thought to be haunted by Lady Marion Carruthers who leapt from the tower to her death in September 1570. Never given a Christian burial, she is supposed to be searching for her resting place. And should you not experience the paranormal, at least you’ll be staying in an exceptionally highly rated hotel. Fife

Fernie Castle. Letham. This heritage-rich building (whose ‘Keep Bar’ dates from the early 1500’s) is said to be haunted by a ‘Green Lady’. See TripAdvisor

Isle of Skye

The Lodge at Edinbane. Edinbane. A former hunting lodge dating from the 16th century, this olde-worlde inn is said to be haunted by a number of spirits – is this because serious criminals were said to have been hanged in the grounds many centuries ago? TripAdvisor

Inverness-shire

Castle Stuart. Inverness. Dating from the early 17th century, Castle Stuart is a magnificent fortified house on the Moray Firth. Once derelict and since restored to its former glory, the house boasts a supposedly haunted guest room: the Three Turret Suite. TripAdvisor

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs

The Winnock Hotel. Drymen. Although much extended since beginning life as a coaching inn during the late 18th century, the 73-bedroom Winnock Hotel still offers some old-world charm. Paranormal investigations have taken place here in the past, with some describing it as one of the most haunted hotels in Scotland. Indeed, the hotel is said to have even run ghost hunting evenings in the past, with “cold spots” and strange lights being experienced. Room 39 is reputed to be the place you’ll most likely get the heebie-jeebies. Or so some say, at any rate. LateRooms.com

Stirlingshire

Airth Castle. Airth. This historic old building is said to be haunted by two young children and their nanny. In fact, some guests have even reported having been spoken to by the latter who enquires whether they have seen the youngsters. And that, in anyone’s book, is pretty spooky. Booking.com
