L’Hostellerie du Chateau. Briquebec, Normandy

This is a genuine medieval castle standing a mere half-hour’s drive from Cherbourg in the Cotentin peninsular. Built in the 11th Century, the building has seen more than its fair share of Anglo-French historic rivalry and was once owned by Robert Bertrand who fought with William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings.

Medieval connections and romance aside, the hotel has played host to both
Queen Victoria and Field Marshall Montgomery. Tripadvisor> | LateRooms

Chateau Les Bruyeres. Cambremer, Normandy

Built in 1816 on the site of much earlier manor, Chateau Les Bruyeres passed through several hands during its early years.

It was during the ownership period of the Petit family that the Chateau accommodated arguably its most famous guest, Marcel Proust. Indeed, so taken with the location was the author that he chose to immortalise it in the novel Within a Budding Grove (A l’Ombre des Jeunes Filles en Fleur) published in 1919. We will be improving our section devoted to period accommodation in Brittany and Normandy soon. In the meantime, please let us know of any chateaux, hotels, inns or bed & breakfasts connected to French icons from centuries ago. We are particularly keen to hear of historic hotels in and around Rouen, Giverny, Lisieux, Bayeux, Coutances, Honfleur, and throughout the Parc Regionale de Normandie Maine. Properties constructed at any time between the 10th and mid 19th centuries are applicable, providing they have retained their historic charm. Thank you.
