Please note that every featured place has a population of 2000 or less, so we really are trying to focus on those that have escaped modern development as much as possible. Indeed, in many cases the number of residents can be counted in tens rather than hundreds.
Of course, we don’t pretend that this is a definitive guide. Far from it. In fact, we welcome feedback and suggestions for inclusion from anyone who believes we’ve missed a “lost village” during our research.
Moreover, we cannot claim to have visited them all, so if you also believe that somewhere is not worthy of inclusion we would also like to hear from you. We also hope to expand this section to include the most beautiful villages in Scotland and Wales in due course.
In the meantime, whether you’re looking for an off-the-beaten track domestic holiday or planning on visiting Britain from overseas, we hope that both this section and the rest of the site helps you find what you’re looking for.

We believe that rural tourism in Britain is all-too-often overlooked by travellers, especially those visiting from outside the UK who prefer to spend time in the major cities. As such, we hope that this section provides a little inspiration for those intending to visit England as well as anyone considering a domestic holiday. We contend that the beauty and diversity of the UK’s rural villages is exceptional, and welcome any suggestions for inclusion in this section of the site. Thank you for visiting - we hope you enjoy Nights In The Past and visit again soon.
