SELMA

There aren’t too many antebellum (pre-Civil War) hotels left in the USA, but the St. James is one of them. Built in 1837, the hotel has recently benefited from a multi-million dollar restoration – work which has ensured that this cherished riverfront building continues to exude the “southern charm” of the past.

Historic significance: It is said that the infamous outlaws Frank and Jesse James stayed at The St. James Hotel during the 1880’s.

SAN FRANCISCO

It would have opened earlier, but the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 meant that this landmark building wouldn’t welcome guests until the following year. Today it possesses 591 individually furnished guest rooms, health club & spa, and renowned restaurants.

Historic significance: The Fairmont’s most important historic claim-to-fame is undoubtedly it being where delegates met during 1945 to draft the United Nations Charter. It is also said that every US President since William Howard Taft has stayed at the hotel, and, more recently, that it was where Tony Bennett first sang “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”.

LOS ANGELES

In
Nights In The Past terms, this grand LA hotel is a true youngster. Opened only in 1923, at the time it was said to have been the largest hotel west of Chicago – and it’s still an impressive structure today, boasting more than 680 guest rooms and suites.

Historic significance: Unsurprisingly, the Millennium Biltmore’s famous past clientele are of the “celebrity” variety. It should be noted, however, that the hotel hosted the Academy Award ceremony no fewer than 8 times, most recently in 1942 (Mrs Miniver being awarded Best Picture)

YOSEMITE

Built in 1879, the hotel is now a National Historic Landmark. Unsurprisingly, the Wawona is one of only a handful of accommodation premises within the boundaries of Yosemite, and is thus favoured by those seeking peaceful and natural surroundings.

Historic significance: Notable former guests include President Theodore Roosevelt, Lilly Langtry, John Ruskin and William Jennings Bryan.

UKIAH

Providing a selection of accommodation options, this Californian Landmark includes three cottages built in 1852. With carbonated mineral baths, hot soaking pool, swimming pool and hundreds of acres of surrounding land, it’s little surprise that it’s been attracting the great & good for the past 150 years.

Historic significance: Notable visitors include Presidents William Harrison, Ulysses S Grant, and Theodore Roosevelt. Literary figures such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Jack London and Mark Twain have also sojourned here, as have boxers “Gentleman” Jim Corbett and John L Sullivan.

RIVERSIDE

With 239 guest rooms – including 28 suites – The Mission is somewhat larger than the average “inn”. Indeed, it also boasts numerous restaurants and a spa. It should be noted, however, that the existing hotel represents a gradually expanding building based upon the original 12-room boarding house of 1876.

Historic significance: It is known that President Theodore Roosevelt stayed here not long after the completion of the Mission Wing in 1903 – he also took part in the ceremonial replanting of one of two orange trees in the courtyard of the hotel. It is also said that Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hamlin Garland wrote parts of his works in the Alhambra Suite.

GRASS VALLEY

This 28-room hotel boasts what is, perhaps, the oldest continually operating saloon west of the Mississippi. Trading since 1851, the Holbrooke blends all the modern conveniences the 21st century traveller requires with the ambience of a bygone age.

Historic significance: It is said that the hotel has been patronised by no fewer than four Presidents, including Benjamin Harrison. It has also hosted Mark Twain, and boxer “Gentleman” Jim Corbett – their names are still to be found in the guest book.
