Pousada de Guimaraes Santa Marinha
~ Lugar da Costa, Guimaraes, Portugal ~
They call the city of Guimaraes the ‘Cradle of the Nation’ on account that Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, is believed to have been born here in 1109. Indeed, in 2001 its centre was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on account of its historic buildings from the middle ages.
The Pousada de Guimaraes Santa Marinha is itself one of the city’s notable buildings. Though largely rebuilt, parts of the property – once an Augustine convent – are reputed to date from the 12th century. Following its restoration it received the National Architecture Prize in 1985.
The hotel has 49 rooms and 2 suites, many of which are located in the old cloisters. All rooms are en suite.
The property also boasts its own swimming pool, gardens and restaurant.
The centre of Guimaraes (which it overlooks from its hillside location) is less than a mile away and offers plenty for the heritage enthusiast. The city has its own medieval castle, several churches (including the fine Sao Francisco), and in the Rua de Santa Marinha, one of the best preserved medieval streets in Europe.
The Palace of the Dukes of Braganza is another of the city’s famous landmarks.

This site is very much a Labour-of-love, and though we try to make sure that factual information is correct, we simply cannot guarantee accuracy either on this page or on any other. That said, we’re trying to make it the best guide on the internet for period accommodation and historic hotels in Europe. As such, we would love to hear from anyone with information relating to an inn, hotel or bed & breakfast we might have overlooked in our research. We also hope you find the site useful, and check back in the future. Thank you for visiting.
