Chateau de Crazannes. Saintes.
Fascinating and truly historic chateau built during the 11th and 16th centuries. Former guests include The Black Prince (1362) and King Francis I (1519). It is also said that a former owner was the inspiration for the central character of Charles Perrault’s Puss in Boots.
The hotel is situated in Crazannes on the outskirts of Saintes. It offers accommodation within the chateau itself (3 rooms and 2 suites), “The Keep” (3 doubles rooms) and an adjoining cottage. Further information and secure online booking is available with LateRooms and TripAdvisor
Chateau de Nieuil. Nieuil.
Both Angouleme and Limoges are within easy reach by car of this splendid rural chateau in the Charente department. Offering bed & breakfast accommodation and a range of eleven bedrooms and suites, it also boasts its own restaurant (La Grange aux Oies).
Its primary historic significance lies in its former role as a hunting lodge. Indeed, it was here that King Francis I (the great rival of England’s Henry VIII) spent significant amounts of time during the early 1500‘s. Please get in touch if you are aware of any historic hotels or other places to stay in Poitou Charentes or Limousin. We are particularly interested to learn of any period properties in major towns such as Saintes, Angouleme, Poitiers and La Rochelle, although we still want to expand our selection of countryside accommodation too. Any suggested hotels should be of great quality (irrespective of official classification) and possess heritage-value. In essence, are they romantic? Will they interest those who like to stay in period buildings? Any information is gratefully received.
