Angers

Château des Briottières. Privately owned 18th century chateau set amid over 120 acres of parkland. LateRooms | Expedia

Le Château de Montriou. Situated in the village of Feneu, a short drive to the north of Angers, this attractive country house has been owned by the same family for three centuries. Offering only four rooms, it boasts its own XV century chapel which is rightfully classified as a national historic monument. LateRooms

Beaugency

Le Grande Hotel de l’Abbaye. The River Loire flows along outside the former ‘Our Lady of Beaugency Abbey’, a seventeenth century structure which rose from the remains of a building some five hundred years older. Now a 3-star rated hotel, it offers 19 guest rooms, many of which have been created from the cells used by former ecclesiastical inhabitants. Expedia

Brain Sur Allonnes

Chateau de la Coutancière. Dating from the early 1800’s, this picture-postcard chateau retains its authenticity in every way. Saumur is only a short drive away, as indeed are many other numerous historic towns and villages of this part of the Loire Valley. TripAdvisor

Challain-la-Potherie

Chateau De Challain. This certainly isn’t the oldest chateau on Nights In The Past, but it is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular. It is evident on first inspection that this is somewhere which would have cost a fortune to build, but Count Rochefoucauld had very deep pockets. It offers six lavish suites, every one of which could be described as luxurious, romantic and traditional. Indeed, our research suggests that almost every guest review of Chateau de Challain is extremely positive - no wonder it is often described as the Neo-Gothic Jewel of Anjou. And that isn’t hyperbole, either. Expedia

Chantonnay

Manoir de Ponsay. Louis XI is said to have used this splendid house while hunting in the region. Its origins are thought to be XV century, with independent reviews of its hospitality very positive. Expedia

Chateauneuf sur Sarthe

Chateau de la Buronniere. Magnificent privately owned castle dating back to 1684. LateRooms

Cholet

Chateau Colbert. In the small town of Maulevrier, this striking building and its grand courtyard is a magnificent example of big-money 17th century architecture. With plenty of period furnishings on display, this might be of interest to the travelling romantic. Expedia

Conflans sur Anille

Château de La Barre. It might well be in the eye of the beholder, but as far as we at Nights In The Past are concerned, this is certainly a very beautiful building. This, though, is unsurprising: those old houses blending several centuries of alterations and extensions are usually so much more appealing than those of perfect symmetry. LateRooms | Expedia

La Flocelliere

Chateau de la Flocelliere. It would be impossible to detail the full history of this splendid castle-cum-country-house here. But anywhere first documented nearly one thousand years ago is likely to have some extraordinary tales to tell. Expedia

La Jaille Yvon

Chateau du Plessis. Several accommodation options are available at this 18th/19th century country house – bed and breakfast, self-catering in the lodge house, or the nearby cottage. Expedia

Le Mans

Chateau de Vauloge. Located a short drive to the south west of Le Mans in the village of Fercé-sur-Sarthe, Chateau de Vauloge is certainly one of the prettiest of all the Loire Valley chateaux. The original parts of the structure date from the early 1400‘s, with defensive additions being made in the first two decades of the 17th century. It offers five guest rooms in all. Expedia | LateRooms

Martigne-sur-Mayenne

Chateau de Mytheme. It certainly looks more antique than it actually is (19th century), but there’s something rather splendid about the towers one might imagine Rapunzel living in. TripAdvisor

Saint Paterne

Chateau de Saint Paterne. One look at this beautiful place and you’ll wish it were yours. Located close to the border with Normandy, there are fewer better-positioned places to stay for anyone wishing to explore north west France by car. Expedia

Saumur

Chateau de Verrières. Napoleon III mansion situated in the town known as “the Pearl of Anjou”. LateRooms | Expedia

Hotel Anne d’Anjou. An attractive 18th century mansion. Expedia

Le Prieure. A part 12th and part 16th century structure which formerly served as a Benedictine monastery. Expedia | www.lastminute.com

Hotel Saint Pierre. A highly-rated little hotel, Saint Pierre is housed in what was once a private home of some note built and extended in the 15th and 17th centuries. It offers 18 rooms in all, and is classified as 3-star. Expedia

Pays de la Loire and its departments of Maine-et-Loire, Sarthe, Mayenne, Loire-Atlantique and Vendée arguably contains more chateaux than any other in France - and many provide accommodation. However, we would like to expand this section by increasing the number of other types of hotel to be found in the region. These can be luxury, boutique, bed and breakfast, traditional inn or otherwise. All that matters is that they dispense excellent hospitality and possess period charm. Those with connections to French historical icons are of particular interest. Thank you.
