Chateau de la Coutancière. Dating from the early 1800’s, this picture-postcard chateau retains its authenticity in every way. Saumur is only a short drive away, as indeed are many other numerous historic towns and villages of this part of the Loire Valley. TripAdvisor |

Chateau De Challain. This certainly isn’t the oldest chateau on Nights In The Past, but it is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular. It is evident on first inspection that this is somewhere which would have cost a fortune to build, but Count Rochefoucauld had very deep pockets. It offers six lavish suites, every one of which could be described as luxurious, romantic and traditional. Indeed, our research suggests that almost every guest review of Chateau de Challain is extremely positive - no wonder it is often described as the Neo-Gothic Jewel of Anjou. And that isn’t hyperbole, either. Expedia |

Chateau de Vauloge. Located a short drive to the south west of Le Mans in the village of Fercé-sur-Sarthe, Chateau de Vauloge is certainly one of the prettiest of all the Loire Valley chateaux. The original parts of the structure date from the early 1400‘s, with defensive additions being made in the first two decades of the 17th century. It offers five guest rooms in all. Pays de la Loire and its departments of Maine-et-Loire, Sarthe, Mayenne, Loire-Atlantique and Vendée arguably contains more chateaux than any other in France - and many provide accommodation. However, we would like to expand this section by increasing the number of other types of hotel to be found in the region. These can be luxury, boutique, bed and breakfast, traditional inn or otherwise. All that matters is that they dispense excellent hospitality and possess period charm. Those with connections to French historical icons are of particular interest. Thank you. |
