Berrima

The White Horse Inn. Built around 1832 and formerly a private residence, present day accommodation is to the rear of the original building (which is now a restaurant). Operating as an inn since 1875, its cellars are said to contain manacles and handcuffs which hark back to its time as a temporary gaol. TripAdvisor

Broken Hill

Duke of Cornwall Inn. One of the community’s original pubs, the Duke of Cornwall dates from the 1880’s when Broken Hill was a flourishing mining town. Recently restored and furnished in keeping with its Victorian roots, the inn offers 9 en suite rooms. It is located close to the border of NSW and South Australia. TripAdvisor

East Maitland

The Old George & Dragon. Located at the heart of the famous Hunter Valley, and little over an hour and a half north of Sydney, The Old George and Dragon offers 5 guest rooms and suites. The award-winning restaurant of the same name is situated next door. TripAdvisor | Expedia

Eden

The Crown & Anchor. There are sea views a-plenty at this 1840’s bed & breakfast near Twofold Bay. Licensed as an inn in 1845, the town of Eden is pretty much halfway between Sydney and Melbourne. Moreover, Canberra is only a few hours drive away. TripAdvisor

The Seahorse Inn. Unsurprisingly, a fair number of Australia’s historic inns and hotels were built using convict labour. The Seahorse Inn (1843) in Boydtown is one of them. Rescued from near ruin during the middle of the 20th century, it is today a highly rated boutique hotel some five miles to the south of Eden itself. TripAdvisor

Kiama

Bush Bank. Described as “boutique B&B”, Bush Bank is a blue stone cottage dating from the middle of the 19th century. Sydney is less than two hours away by car to the north. TripAdvisor

Moruya

Post & Telegraph B&B. The very name of this little B&B speaks of Australia’s past. Offering three guest rooms, the ambience is very much “olde world”. TripAdvisor

Picton

George IV Inn. This is certainly one of the oldest inns in Australia and has been operating as such since 1839 - the place even brews its very own beer. Sydney is little over an hour to the north by car. TripAdvisor

St. Albans

Settler’s Arms Inn. Cobb & Co. stagecoaches once used this sandstone building during the 19th century. Today, modern travellers between Sydney and Newcastle do the same. Dating back to 1836, it was built using convict labour and now offers four en suite guestrooms. TripAdvisor

Sydney

Albert & Victoria Court. A boutique hotel offering bed & breakfast accommodation in the historic Potts Point area of the city. Expedia

Cremorne Point Manor. On the North Shore of Sydney Harbour, this restored 19th century ‘Federation style’ hotel provides a great option for those not wishing to stay in the centre of town yet be within easy reach (the ferry to Circular Quay takes less than ten minutes). Expedia

Glenferrie Lodge. Built in 1898, Glenferrie Lodge is rated by some as one of the most affordable hotels in Sydney. It is situated in the Kirribilli District, on the north side of Sydney Harbour. Booking.com | Expedia | LateRooms

Harbour Rocks Hotel. The building itself is over a century and a half old, but the boutique hotel of today is very much geared towards the demands of the 21st century traveller. It is said to occupy the site of Sydney’s very first hospital, and was constructed by both convict labourers and skilled workers. It offers a total of 55 guest rooms in all. Booking.com | Expedia

Simpsons of Potts Point. Independent reviews suggest that this is one of the finest places to stay in the whole of Sydney. Dating back to 1892, it was designed by John Bede Barlow – a respected architect of late Victorian times – and was painstakingly restored during the 1980’s. Booking.com | TripAdvisor

Sir Stamford at Circular Quay. Listed on the National Heritage Register, this 19th century building on the famous Macquarie Street features plenty of classic antiques. As befits somewhere containing one of the nation’s largest private collections of fine art, the Sir Stamford is rated as 5-star. Booking.com | Expedia

The Hughendon. Located in the Eastern Suburbs, this boutique hotel has connections to the philosopher Barzillai Quaife (his son built the house around 1870). Interestingly, it is named after British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli’s Buckinghamshire home. LateRooms | Expedia

The Lord Nelson Brewery. This is the oldest continually licensed hotel in Sydney and dates from the 1830’s. It has been known by a number of names in its illustrious history, including the Shipwrights Arms and the Sailor’s Return. As you might expect of a building of such historic importance, it is situated in The Rocks district of the city. TripAdvisor

The Russell. Situated in The Rocks - as many of Sydney’s oldest buildings are – the Russell was built in the 1880’s. Today it operates as a boutique hotel and offers a total of 26 rooms. Booking.com | Expedia

The Woolbrokers at Darling Harbour. With its origins as a late-nineteenth century pub, The Woolbrokers was refurbished during 1991 and became bed & breakfast accommodation. Expedia

We believe we may be close to providing the definitive list of the oldest hotels and inns in Australia. However, it is likely that during our research we’ve overlooked somewhere of particular historic importance and, as such, would be grateful for information about accommodation we have failed to include. We are particularly keen to learn of period hotels in and around Sydney and Melbourne. These should have retained as much of their original architecture as possible and, of course, provide first rate accommodation. Hotels to suit those on a romantic break are especially welcome.
