Chateau de Goudourville. Goudourville.

Such is the strength of this ancient castle that Simon de Montfort failed to take it after a fearsome siege. Indeed, built in the XI century, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t remain standing for a thousand years more.

It’s history is, of course, extremely lengthy and colourful. But many will be interested to learn that both
Henri IV of France and Pope Clement V both stayed at Chateau de Goudourville - its name being derived from the Latin “Gothurum Villa” (House of the Goths).

There are six rooms available to guests, including one named after
Charles IX (1550-1574) who is known to have stayed here for a number of months.

The border with Aquitaine is close by, and the city of Toulouse little over an hours drive south east. More information is available via TripAdvisor

More Historic Hotels in Midi-Pyrenees

Albi

Hostellerie Saint Antoine. Dating from the 1730’s, this traditional inn has been run by the same family for the past five generations – a rare thing to find these days. Occupying the site of a monastery which would have been in existence nearly a thousand years ago, Saint Antoine is right at the centre of Albi. Towns and cities such as Castres, Toulouse and Montauban are all within easy reach by car. Expedia | www.lastminute.com

Cahuzac-sur-Vere

Chateau de Salettes. If a contemporary boutique hotel within an ancient building appeals, then Chateau de Salettes might be of some interest. Expedia

Conques

Domaine de Cambelong. Don’t just visit one of France’s most beautiful medieval villages… stay there. This ancient watermill stands on the edge of the community and is listed in the Chateaux and Hotels Collection. Expedia

Cordes Sur Ciel

Le Grande Ecuyer. As an indication of its impeccable heritage, this place became a listed building as far back as the 1800’s. The period furnishings may be from the 18th century and thereabouts, but some of the original architecture of this famous old inn dates back almost 800 years. Moreover, French icons of more recent times have flocked here, General de Gaulle, Francois Mitterrand, and Georges Pompidou among them. Expedia

Cuq Toulza

Hotel Cuq en Terrasses. A highly regarded hotel-restaurant, this eighteenth century rural house was once a presbytery. Toulouse, Carcassonne, Albi and Castres are all within easy reach by car. TripAdvisor

Estaing

Le Manoir de la Fabregues. Located in what is considered one of the loveliest villages in the whole of France, this former manor house blends gentle contemporary interior style with bucolic architectural charm. TripAdvisor

Figeac

Chateau du Viguier du Roy. Extensively restored after falling into a state of almost total ruin, this medieval chateau is now as beautiful as it would have been in the 12th century. Expedia

Fources

Chateau de Fources. A Gascony treasure, Chateau de Fources is a genuine renaissance castle. Beautiful. TripAdvisor

Garrevaques

Chateau de Garrevaques. Originally constructed in 1480, this striking building was extensively damaged during the French Revolution and was almost entirely rebuilt shortly after. Expedia

Martel

Hotel Relais Sainte Anne. One of the Hotels de Charme et Caractere, Relais Sainte Anne is certainly awash with period charm. Situated in a beautiful medieval village, the hotel is located right in the north west corner of Midi-Pyrenees. TripAdvisor

Meyronne

La Terrasse. This stunning fortress was turned into a hotel in the 1920’s, and its aesthetics have been wowing guests ever since. Fought over for hundreds of years, its origins lie in the 11th century, making it one of the most ancient places offering accommodation anywhere in the world. Expedia

Najac

L’Oustal del Barry. This two-star inn overlooking the Aveyron Valley is situated within one of the “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France”. Expedia

Rocamadour

Les Vieilles Tours. Largely from the 1600’s, parts of this delightful building are several hundred years older. Located in the north of the Midi-Pyrenees region (Aquitaine is only 10 miles away as the crow flies), it provides those visitors with cars plenty of touring and sightseeing options in every direction. Expedia

Best Western Beau Site. An attractive and authentic period hotel located close to the heart of the medieval city. Expedia | www.lastminute.com

Soreze

Hotellerie Abbaye Ecole de Soreze. A simply magnificent listed Historic Monument. Expedia

Toulouse

Chateau de Seguenville. There has been a chateau here since the 1200‘s, but the existing one was built during the 19th century with its predecessor having been destroyed during the French Revolution. Offering five rooms and bed & breakfast accommodation, Chateau de Seguneville is only around 30 minutes from Toulouse airport. TripAdvisor

Grand Hotel de l’Opera. Situated on the Place du Capitole, it is almost impossible to be more central in Toulouse. Dating from the 17th century, the building was formerly a convent prior to becoming a 4-star hotel. Expedia | www.lastminute.com

Touzac

Hostellerie la Source Bleue. For a little bit of tranquility you could do far worse than Le Source Bleue. Situated close to the border of Midi-Pyrenees and Aquitaine - almost at the same latitude as Bordeaux - the hotel is formed from ancient watermills which date from the 11th and 15th centuries. It offers sixteen rooms in total, and an adjoining restaurant, "La Bambouseraie". Expedia

Midi-Pyrenees is a particularly large region of France. As such, we are sure that despite extensive research there will be a historic hotel or inn we’ve missed or overlooked. As such, we would be particularly grateful to anyone who might have information about a hidden gem in any of its departments: Lot, Gers, Hautes-Pyrénées, Arriège, Haute-Garonne, Tarn, Tarn- et-Garonne and Aveyron. Romantic places to stay are, of course, most important. But they really should be of historic significance and have maintained as much of their original architectural fabric as possible. Thank you.
