More Period and Historic Hotels in Lombardy

Brescia

Villa Fenaroli Palace Hotel. A national monument (dated 1735) this striking house is as aristocratic in looks as it once was in function. Only a few miles from the centre of Brescia in Rezzato, the hotel is highly rated by independent reviewers and offers 5-star hospitality. LateRooms | Expedia | TripAdvisor

Carimate (nr Como)

Castello di Carimate. They certainly don’t build them like Castello di Carimate anymore - and for that we are all the poorer. This four-star hotel welcomes discerning guests from all over the globe, continuing a tradition which has included King Umberto I (1877 and 1885), and Emperor Massimilano I d'Asburgo in 1493. The icing on its historical cake is, perhaps, that it was originally built in the 12th century. LateRooms | Expedia

Cervesina (Pavia)

Castello di San Gaudenzio. Strictly a fortified manor house, this still looks for all the world like a genuine Italian castle – towers at each corner, crenellations and all. Built in the XV century and adorned with gothic arch windows, the 4-star hotel of today offers a total of 45 bedrooms. Anyone staying here will be following in the footsteps of a fair few notables, King Carlo Gustavo of Sweden included. TripAdvisor

Cologno Al Serio

Antico Borgo La Muratella. Four star accommodation in a hotel dating back to circa 1500. LateRooms | Expedia

Como

Albergo Del Duca. Centrally located in the town of Como, the Hotel Del Luca is a 17th century townhouse, some of whose guest rooms overlook the Piazza Mazzini. Expedia

Erba

Castello di Casiglio. A splendid centuries-old country house within easy reach of Lake Como’s two southern shores. Expedia

Milan

Antica Locanda dei Mercanti. A fine 18th century town house which today offers distinctly designer boutique accommodation. The hotel offers 4-rooms and is within easy reach of La Scala and the Duomo. Expedia

Monza

Hotel de la Ville. Probably built during the late 1700’s, this 4-star hotel offers a total of 63 rooms. A member of the ‘Small Luxury Hotels of The World’, it is located a short distance to the north east of Milan. Expedia | LateRooms

Salo’

Villa Arcadio Hotel & Resort. Luxury overlooking Lake Garda, Villa Arcadio’s roots are as a 16th century convent. Expedia

Varese

Locanda Dei Mai Intees Interestingly, this fifteenth century property takes its name from a group of people who would once meet here - “mai intees” translates as “never understood”, so they would play music instead. Or so the legend goes. It offers twelve rooms in all and is situated within easy reach of Milan (half an hour by car). Tripadvisor | Expedia

More Period and Historic Hotels in Liguria

Camogli

Hotel Cenobio dei Dogi. For the history-lover, this is certainly one of the best coastal hotels in Europe. Blending its 16th century heritage with facilities for the 21st century visitor, Cenobio dei Dogi is a four star hotel with a similar historical rating: it was here that the Genoese Doges would meet, and comes complete with its own chapel once used by Cardinals. Expedia

Genoa (Genova)

Torre Cambiaso. This attractive old building was once used as a lookout for potential Arab invaders during the 16th and 17th centuries, but it is said to have a history dating back as far as the fourteenth. A genuine aristocratic residence, it offers 42 rooms (including 7 suites) and is situated outside the bustle of Genoa, but only a few miles from Christopher Columbus airport. Expedia

Levanto

La Sosta di Ottone III. Located just a few miles from Levanto in the small village of Chiesanuova, this 4-room sixteenth century inn is on the site of a building at which King Otto III is said to have stayed in AD 996 en route to his coronation in Rome. Fit & healthy romantics will no doubt be happy to learn that the place is inaccessible by car – a hundred metre walk is necessary. Expedia

Moneglia

Abbadia San Giorgio. Between Portofino and Cinque Terre, this former monastery is said to date back to 1396. But while its antiquity will attract some, others will be more interested to hear the regular eulogies of the sheer quality of this luxury bed & breakfast. This is, without doubt, one of those historic places to stay which Italy excels in. TripAdvisor

Rapallo

Hotel Europa. Since the advent of the EU, plenty of hotels have decided upon the name ‘Europa’, but this name-change dates back to 1901. That said, it is actually an 18th century building – once called the Palazzo Serra – which was patronised by the likes of Pius VII and Victor Emmanuel I during the early 1800’s. Expedia

Residence Il Convento. A 17th century building which offers both suites and apartments. Expedia

Savignone

Palazzo Fieschi. Offering 24 rooms, this countryside residence is thought to have been built during the 16th century. Genoa is little over 20 miles away. Expedia

Sestri Levante

Grand Hotel dei Castelli. An ancient castle this may be, but the interior is extremely elegant. This four-star hotel offers 48 rooms and views across the Gulf of Tigullio. Expedia

Are you aware of any historic hotels or period accommodation we might have overlooked in Lombardy or Liguria (The Italian Riviera)? If so, please get in touch and let us know. We are interested to hear of all types of accommodation - boutique hotels, castles, traditional Italian Inns - providing they are of high quality and have maintained as much of their heritage as possible. We are particularly keen to include more hotels in Milan (Milano), Como and other popular visitor destinations. Thank you.
