It offers 41 rooms in all, and is situated little over an hour’s drive to the west of Melbourne. TripAdvisor

Freeman on Ford. There can’t be too many places on earth that have acted as both bank and convent during their history. This, though, is one of them. Built in 1866, it was an Oriental Bank for less than 20 years prior to becoming home to Brigidine nuns from Ireland. Offering only four rooms, many of Australia’s major cities – Sydney, Adelaide, Canberra and Melbourne – are less than a day’s drive away (the latter around 3 hours). TripAdvisor
Bendigo
Hotel Shamrock. Definitely not an Irish theme pub, but in truth a grand old hotel dating from the mid 19th century. TripAdvisor
Birregurra
Elliminook B&B. Rightly listed by the National Trust of Australia, Elliminook was constructed in 1865 as a "commodious brick homestead of 14 rooms". Melbourne is only a couple of hours drive to the east, which, in Australian terms, is nothing. TripAdvisor

Glen Isla House. Located in the small town of Cowes, Glen Isla offers several accommodation options to the visitor. The one of interest to the heritage enthusiast, however, will be the ‘Suite Cottage’ which dates back to the 1870’s and is furnished accordingly. TripAdvisor

Please get in touch if you believe we have missed a particular example of heritage accommodation in Australia. We are, of course, especially keen to learn of historic hotels, bed & breakfasts, or other places to stay in and around the major cities - these should have retained as much of their historic character as possible. Featured hotels can be luxury, boutique or budget, but all should provide top class hospitality irrespective of their official classification.
