Chateau d’Etoges. Etoges, Champagne-Ardennes

Make no mistake, Chateau d’Etoges is a pretty exclusive hotel. Situated in its own wooded parkland on the route between Starsbourg and Paris, this beautiful building is surrounded by a moat and numerous fountains and ponds. Accommodating guests since 1991, Chateau d’Etoges dates back to the 12th century with modifications having been made in the 16th.

The Chateau was used by several Kings of France as a staging post when travelling to their eastern dominions -
Louis XIV, the Sun King, was particularly taken with the water features, and it is also said that Louis XVI stayed here during his flight to Varennes in 1791. Napoleon is also thought to have visited. Tripadvisor | Expedia

Arc-en-Barrois

Hôtel Du Parc. Part of the Logis International group, this former hunting inn is located within an hours drive of both Dijon and Troyes. TripAdvisor

Chalons-en-Champagne

Hotel Pasteur. This 2-star hotel is set within a former convent. TripAdvisor

Hotel de la Poste. A 33-room inn that has been dispensing hospitality to travellers for almost 500 years. TripAdvisor

Dolancourt

Moulin du Landion. Situated within the Parc Naturel Régional de la Forêt d'Orient, this watermill is the best part of half a millennium old. LateRooms | Expedia

Epernay

Castel Jeanson. The former home of Champagne nobility, Castel Jeanson is now a highly rated 3 star hotel. TripAdvisor

Fere-en-Tardenois

Chateau de Fere. The romantic ruins of the original 13th century castle are the backdrop to this four star hotel. Mind you, the “new” castle dates from the 1500’s and features the type of extensive wine cellar a monarch would envy. Reims is close by, and Paris is little over sixty miles away. Expedia

Juvigny

Château de Juvigny. The present house dates from the early 1700’s, but the landscape historian will no doubt point out the moat which would have encircled a previous structure (some 300 years older). Find the best deal, compare prices and read what other travelers have to say at TripAdvisor

Reims

Grand Hotel des Templiers. Dating from the 1800‘s, this intimate 18-room hotel is only a short walk from the city’s famous cathedral and the centre of Reims. Expedia

Sedan

Hotellerie Le Chateau Fort. Accommodation within the walls of Europe’s largest castle (15th century). LateRooms | Expedia

Tinqueux

L’Assiette Champenoise. Splendid mansion on the outskirts of Reims. Expedia

Troyes

La Maison de Rhodes. There are some visual parallels to be drawn with the famous Globe Theatre in London – both timber frame buildings with open interior space. That, however, is where the similarities end. Situated in the medieval district of Troyes, Maison de Rhodes once belonged to the Knights Templar Order of Malta and possesses foundations dating from the 12th century and a superstructure from the 17th. Painstakingly restored to its former glory, it now offers 11 guest rooms and four star hospitality. TripAdvisor

Le Champ des Oisaeux. An attractive oak-frame house typical of the many in Troyes built shortly after the great fire of 1524. TripAdvisor

Verneuil

Le Havre du Percheron. Those with a good knowledge of the countryside will probably conclude that this place has a connection to the famous breed of heavy horse. And they would be right - the building was once part of a large farm which specialised in the rearing of plough horses. Rustic and traditional, it offers only two guest rooms. TripAdvisor
