Amboise
Au Charme Rabelaisien. This little 18th century guesthouse has been the recipient of some extremely noteworthy guest reviews. Located right at the heart of Amboise, it also boasts its own outdoor swimming pool. Booking.com
Chateau des Arpentis. Formerly the property of the Duke of Luynes, this heritage-rich house once had King Louis XIII as an esteemed guest. Booking.com
Chateau de Chissay. More than a fair few notables have visited this splendid chateau, Charles de Gaulle among them. TripAdvisor
Hotel Le Manoir les Minimes. 4-star rated, this fine period hotel was built on the foundations of a medieval monastery. Our research suggests that this is almost universally highly regarded by reviewers. TripAdvisor
Auberge de Launay. Independent reviews are very favourable for this 18th century farmhouse hotel. Expedia
Chateau de Pray. The origins of this country house castle are said to date back as far as 1224. Booking.com
Hotel Le Choiseul. A hotel made up of not one, but three 18th century houses, this Grandes Etapes Françaises property offers over 30 rooms. Most of these either have views of the gardens or of the River Loire. Booking.com | Lastminute.com
Aubigny Sur Nere
Chateau de la Verrerie. There are elements of both Scotland and France to be found in this architectural gem. Mind you, this is unsurprising given its connections to the “Auld Alliance”. Offering 12 very distinctly styled period rooms, this beautiful building is situated almost mid way between Orleans and Bourges in famously peaceful countryside. Booking.com
Baccon
Chateau La Touanne. An eighteenth century country house which is still very much a family home as well as a hotel. TripAdvisor
Chenonceau
Hotel du Bon Laboureur. Accommodation at this former post house is divided between no fewer than five buildings – 25 rooms in all. Rustic charm. Booking.com | Expedia
Cheverny
Chateau de Breuil. There are parts of this delightful chateau which date back to the fifteenth century, although most of the existing house is between 100 and 300 years old. Blois is only a few miles to the north, while Tours and Orleans are close by for those with their own transport. Booking.com
Chinon
Best Western Hotel de France. A sixteenth century building at the heart of splendid Chinon, and close to the historic Rue Voltaire. Expedia | Lastminute.com
Chateau de Marcay. (Near Chinon). A genuine medieval chateau offering 34 guest rooms. More information is available through Booking.com | Lastminute.com
Hotel Diderot. Everything that sterile corporate hospitality is not. Nights In The Past has stayed here and certainly recommends it as a base to explore the fascinating little town of Chinon – undoubtedly one of the most historic places in the whole of France. Booking.com | TripAdvisor
Hostellerie Gargantua. Set below the old castle, this former Bailiwick’s Palace dates back to the fifteenth century. It is yet another piece in Chinon’s historical jigsaw, set on the Rue Voltaire. TripAdvisor
La Milaudière. Independent reviews suggest that this is one of the best bed & breakfasts in the Centre region of France. Formerly a farm, it dates from the 15th to 18th centuries. It is located only a few minutes drive from the town itself. TripAdvisor
Courcelles-de-Touraine
Chateau des Sept Tours. The origins of this country house are reputed to date back almost 500 years. Set within the triangle of Angers, Tours and Le Mans, it boasts an 18-hole golf course. Booking.com | Expedia
Esvres
Chateau de la Villaine. Built upon the remains of a 14th century fortress, there is, alas, little other readily available historical information. However, the excellent reviews to be found at the time of writing certainly make this period house worthy of inclusion here. Booking.com
Luynes
Domaine de Beauvois. Long favoured as a retreat by the rich and famous, the hotel is situated within a manor house dating from both the 16th and 17th centuries. Booking.com | Expedia
Monteaux
Le Chateau du Portail. Prince Ranier and Princess Grace of Monaco were frequent visitors to this Loire Valley country house during the 1960’s. Originally constructed in the 14th century, the property was enlarged during the 17th and 18th centuries to become the fine chateau it is today. Booking.com
Noyant-de-Touraine
Chateau de Brou. Set within parkland and grounds of over 100 acres, this fifteenth century country house offers 12 guest rooms (two of which are suites) named after various French historic icons. Booking.com
Onzain
Domaine des Hauts de Loire. Originally a hunting lodge built in the mid-1800’s, this is certainly not the most ancient place to stay in the area. But it remains a de facto period property with plenty of reminders of yesteryear – and one with a 2-star Michelin restaurant at that. Expedia
Orleans
Chateau Les Muids. There’s almost a fairytale to the origins of this pretty castle and country house. Taken prisoner at the Battle of Fontenoy in 1741, Thomas Skottowe (an Irish officer in the British Army) fell in love with the area in which he found himself detained. Once released, he set about building the present chateau, this being extended by his son in the early 1800’s. The hotel is located in the village of La Ferté-Saint-Aubin, some 20 minutes from Orleans by car. Booking.com
Razines
Chateau de Charge. With a history spanning the best part of six hundred years, Chateau de Charge is located in the south western part of the Indre-et-Loire department. Booking.com
Saint-Georges-sur-Cher
Prieure de la Chaise. Located a short drive to the east of Tours, Prieure de la Chaise is a very beautiful 16th century manor house offering bed & breakfast accommodation. Enthusiasts of the early-medieval will also be pleased to learn that it has its own 12th century chapel. Booking.com
Saint Michel sur Loire
Chateau de Montbrun. Ivy clad walls. Turrets. It can only be a Loire valley chateau. Booking.com
Saint Symphorien le Chateau
Chateau d'Esclimont. Four-star accommodation in a truly magnificent 16th century chateau near Chartres. LateRooms | Booking.com
Selles St Denis
L'Auberge du Cheval Blanc. Francophones will have no difficulty translating the name of this 17th century inn. Booking.com | TripAdvisor
Sens Beaujeu
Chateau de Beaujeu. Restored in the early 1800’s, evidence suggests that this fine rural house dates back as far as 1566. Unsurprisingly, it is included on the Inventaire des Monuments Historiques de France. Expedia
Tours
Chateau De L'Aubriere. (Near Tours) An attractive chateau dating back only to the mid-1800‘s but located on the site of earlier buildings. Booking.com | Expedia
Château de la Bourdaisière. (Near Tours). Famous sixteenth century country house, built by Francis I for his mistress Marie Gaudin. Booking.com | Lastminute.com
Les Hautes Roches. (Near Tours) Unusual, but certainly historic, accommodation comprising a seventeenth century villa and rooms carved from the chalk cliffs. Expedia
Trogues
Les Molieres. This pretty manor house is almost a welcome distraction from the wealth of magnificent chateaux offering accommodation in the area. Indeed, it wouldn’t look out of place in the English Home Counties. Booking.com | LateRooms
Vernou sur Brenne
Chateau de Jallanges. Superb 15th century country house within its own parkland. Booking.com
The Centre region of France is home to many of the nation’s most historic towns and cities. As such, it is extremely popular with those seeking cultural holidays. To this end we would very much like to expand this section and hope to hear from anyone with information about a particular period hotel we might have overlooked. We are interested in all types of accommodation - luxury hotel, bed & breakfast, chateaux, traditional inn, boutique hotel - in all of its departments: Cher, Eure-et-Loir, Indre, Indre-et-Loire, Loir-et-Cher and Loiret. Thank you.
