Historic British Cities: York
The Jewel in Yorkshire’s Crown
To the Romans it was Eboracum, and to the Vikings Jorvik. But to many today it is simply the finest city in the whole of the United Kingdom.
York Minster is, by some way, the largest gothic cathedral to be found in northern Europe, and dominates the skyline of the city. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries, it itself stands upon the foundations of previous Roman structures. Meanwhile, The Shambles (a medieval thoroughfare) has been called the most picturesque street in England.
The city is also home to the National Railway Museum and the Yorvik Viking Centre, while the Castle Museum (formerly two prison buildings) is where the famous highwayman Dick Turpin was hanged in 1739.
Furthermore, it is also ideally located for sampling the natural delights of North Yorkshire which boasts some of the finest walking routes in the country.
Period Places to Stay in York
The Guy Fawkes Inn. Set below the magnificent Minster on High Petergate, the name of this atmospheric hotel (it even has gas lighting) derives from the fact that the notorious Gunpowder Plotter was supposedly born in the courtyard cottage in April 1570. It offers 12 en suite rooms in total, a bar, restaurant and an enviable central location.

If you prefer a holiday or break under your own steam, there are plenty of Historic Holiday Cottages throughout the country (and lots within easy reach of York). Moreover, we keep the ones we feature to those said to have been built before 1700, too.

We believe that the likes of The Judges Lodgings and the Guy Fawkes Inn represent some of the best hotels in York for the history enthusiast. However, we have almost certainly overlooked somewhere special in our research and would thus love to hear from anyone with information regarding period accommodation in, or immediately around, the city. Indeed, suggestions for any section of the site are welcome - we very much hope to continue to develop it over coming years to make it one of the best travel sites on the web. Thank you for visiting.
