Historic British Cities: Winchester
Ancient Capital of England
Although its origins date back to the founding of a hill fort in the west of the present city in 150BC, Winchester is most famous for its pivotal role in English history during the last 1,200 years.
It was here that King Alfred was crowned in 871AD; where Henry IV married Joan of Navarre; where Henry VIII entertained Emperor Charles V; and where Mary Tudor married Philip of Spain. It is a city with a historic legacy few others can match.
Winchester cathedral dates, in parts, from the eleventh century, and possesses the longest medieval nave anywhere in Europe. Moreover, it is also the final resting place of both Jane Austen and Izaak Walton.
Other notable buildings include the ruins of Wolvesey Castle and the Great Hall in which ‘King Arthur’s Round Table’ (though unlikely to be the actual artefact) is housed
