Historic British Cities: Chester

“The City of the Legion”.

- Nennius (9th century)

It was the 20th Roman Legion who founded Deva Victrix around 70AD, and much of Chester’s ancient heritage is visible to this day.

The city is almost certainly the finest walled city in Britain, with all but a fraction of its stone enclosure remaining.

Moreover, it even boasts its own amphitheatre, of which half has been excavated and is open to the public. Experts believe that it would have held around 10,000 people.

Chester is also famous for its ‘rows’ – galleried shops originating from the medieval period and later remodelled during the Victorian. It is also home to the oldest (and shortest) racecourse in the country, the Roodee; a fine cathedral; and the UK’s largest zoo.

Definitely one of the most classy cities in England, it remains a particular favourite of
Nights In The Past.

Period Places to Stay in Chester

Green Bough Hotel. Nights In The Past tends to only highlight hotels and inns that predate the Victorian period, but the Green Bough is most certainly worthy of exception. This small townhouse property has been the recipient of some extremely favourable independent reviews, and was the 2006 winner of the ‘Best Small Hotel of the Year Award’ from Enjoy England. 4-star rated, it is located on the outskirts of Chester on Hoole Road.

Chester Grosvenor. Arguably the city’s most iconic hotel, the half-timbered and Grade-II listed Grosvenor is a five-star establishment located right at the heart of the city. Though its styling is chic and contemporary, it’s been dispensing hospitality for over 140 years and continues to attract the rich and famous. It boasts over 80 rooms (including a Presidential Suite), a Michelin starred restaurant and a spa.

Best Western Queen Hotel. Famous former guests include the actress Lillie Langtry, author Charles Dickens and the architect of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Cecil Rhodes. Though built during the mid-1800’s, this is very much a hotel for the 21st century traveller, and today boasts over 130 rooms and suites (the largest establishment in the city). Situated opposite Chester’s railway station, the centre of town is only a few minutes away.

Chester Recorder Hotel. Offering bed & breakfast accommodation right in the heart of Chester, this distinctly ‘period’ guest house dates back to the 18th century. It offers ten rooms in all, several of which contain four-posters, with some boasting fine views of the river Dee. The property also benefits from on-site parking (a rare thing for accommodation in the centre of town).

Mickle Trafford Manor. An option for those who would prefer to stay outside of the city, Mickle Trafford Manor (in the village of the same name) dates from 1565 and offers bed & breakfast accommodation. With only four rooms – all of which are individually furnished – the place is the antithesis of corporate “pile ‘em high” hospitality. The centre of Chester is only a few miles away.

TripAdvisor

Rowton Hall Country House Hotel. While set amid extensive garden and parkland, the city centre of Chester is little more than a couple of miles away from Rowton Hall. Dating, in parts, from 1779, the property became a hotel in the 1950’s. It is now classified as four-star, offers 37 en suite guest rooms (all individually designed), health club, indoor swimming pool, restaurant and bar.

It seems almost ridiculous to visit somewhere as beautiful and historic as Cheshire’s capital only to stay somewhere modern and functional. And in The Grosvenor, Rowton Hall, Green Bough and the others above, we believe we’ve highlighted the best hotels in Chester for the heritage-traveller. That said, we would dearly like to expand this section and welcome suggestions for other period accommodation we might have overlooked. So, if you know of somewhere offering excellent hospitality in the city, please don’t hesitate to let us know. Thank you.
