Chateau de Vollore. Vollore-Ville
Chateau de Vollore. This should be of great interest to those interested in American history and, particularly, the War of Independence – it was, after all, the home of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, who fought alongside George Washington at battles such as Brandywire in 1777. His descendants still live here today.
But the history of Chateau de Vollore is far more lengthy than its connection to US independence. Believed to date from the 12th century, it is said to be haunted by a lady called Blanche de Vollore who died in the castle’s dungeons over 700 years ago.

Bourbon-l'Archambault
Grand Hotel Montespan Talleyrand. Unfortunately, there is little information readily to hand which helps identify the exact age of the place, but brand new it most definitely is not. Anyone looking for a hotel base in the very middle of France would do a lot worse than consider this. Expedia | TripAdvisor
Clermont Ferrand
Chateau Royal de Saint Saturnin. (near Clermont Ferrand) This exceptionally impressive castle dates in parts from the 13th century, with the five guest rooms and suites located in some of the most ancient areas of the building. Historically, it has been the property of three great figures - Catherine de Médicis, Queen Marguerite de Valois, and Louis XIII – and is situated in what has been described as one of France’s most beautiful villages. Montlucon
Domain Chateau Saint Jean. A hotel since 1925, the building was once the property of the Malta Order Knights of Saint Jean of Jerusalem. TripAdvisor
Moulins
Randan
Château de Maulmont. Formerly the property of the sister of the King of France, the present building dates back to the mid-1800‘s. Its history, however, can be traced to the 13th. Booking.com | TripAdvisor
Saint-Arcons-d’Allier
Saint Gervais d’Auvergne
Relais d’Auvergne. A little 2-star hotel offering period character close to the European Park of Vulcanism (Vulcania). TripAdvisor
Tence
Thuret
Chateau de la Caniere. If independent reviews are to be believed, this is one of the best hotels in the Auvergne. Four star rated, this 19th century country house is set amid the Puy-de-Dome countryside. Both Vichy and Clermont Ferrand are nearby. Booking.com | TripAdvisor
Vezac
Chateau de Salles. Built in 1476, destroyed and then rebuilt a century later, this former watchtower overlooks the splendid Cere valley. Booking.com | Expedia
Vichy
Chateau de Busset. This is surely one of the most beautiful chateaux in the whole of France. A magnificent fortress dating from the medieval period, its personal history is far too extensive to detail here. Overlooking the Allier valley, it is only a couple of miles to the centre of Vichy itself. Booking.com | TripAdvisor

We still have a long way to go to make Nights In The Past as exhaustive as it can be, so let us know of any hotels or other accommodation you think worthy of merit in this section. They can be boutique, chateaux, traditional inns, or bed & breakfasts, just as long as they are of historic significance. Hotels in any of its departments (Allier, Puy-de-Dome, Cantal and Haute Loire) are of interest to us, but they should offer the highest level of hospitality in all cases. Those with connections to famous historical French icons are most welcome.
