Hotel du Dragon. Strasbourg

The name of the Hotel du Dragon is linked to the Drachenfels family who acquired the property in 1466 – a title which, in German, literally means ‘cliff of the dragon’.

It should be noted, however, that the first mention of the hotel is to be found more than a century earlier when it was known as Hotel Endingen. By 1418, though, the building had become the residence of the Emperor Sigismond.

It isn’t until the late seventeenth century, however, that we find the hotel linked to a household historic name. Arriving in late October 1681, Louis XIV stayed for several days at the Hotel du Dragon while inspecting his new territories. Expedia | TripAdvisor

More Historic Hotels in Alsace

Colmar

Le Marechal. A beautiful hotel in the beautiful village known as “little Venice”. Practical details and availability checks can be found at Booking.com | Lastminute.com

Hotel Saint Martin. On the site of an ancient coaching inn, this period hotel offers 24 guest rooms and boasts a fine Louis XVI façade. TripAdvisor

La Maison des Tetes. Right at the heart of Colmar and close to the Unterlinden Museum, this 17th century house is certainly very striking. Booking.com

Kientzheim

Abbaye d’Alspach. The origins of this former convent are reputed to date back to the 11th century. The accommodation is certainly less austere than it would have been back then, and it today offers three-star rated hospitality. Expedia | TripAdvisor

Riquewihr

Hotel de la Couronne.
Situated in one of the “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" (The Most Beautiful Villages of France), this little 2-star hotel is very much a traditional old inn. Expedia | TripAdvisor

Rouffach

Chateau d'Isenbourg. Amid the vineyards of Alsace, it is said to be possible to see the Black Forest from this four star hotel. Boasting two dining rooms, one (the Salle Dagobert) possesses a vaulted ceiling dating from the 14th century. Expedia | TripAdvisor | Lastminute.com

Obernai

Hotel a la Cour d'Alsace. A former manor house, this highly regarded 43-room, 4-star hotel offers a restaurant and wine tavern. Booking.com

Le Gouverneur. An atttractive half-timbered building whose guest rooms surround a central courtyard. Booking.com

Osthoffen

Chateau d’Osthoffen. Anyone seeking to immerse themselves in classic Alsantian period charm could do a great deal worse than consider this beautiful place. The rooms, all classically furnished, are individually named reflecting the castle’s heritage: Viscount François Grouvel’s bedroom, the Gulath Wellenbourg bedroom, Frau von Ketschau’s bedroom, among them. Strasbourg is just a short drive to the east. Booking.com

Ottrott Le Haut

Hostellerie des Chateaux & Spa. It has certainly expanded since being built in the seventeenth century, but this four star hotel still provides an historic feel throughout the original building. Expedia | TripAdvisor

Le Beau Site. Period accommodation in one of the region’s prettiest villages. Expedia

Selestat

Abbaye de la Pommeraie. If only the hotel were to provide more information on the heritage of the building - it is, after all, a former Cistercian monastery. We can safely assume, therefore, that it is of some age. Booking.com

Stotzheim

Chateau de Grunstein. Within easy reach of both Strasbourg and Colmar, this five-guest room chateau is one of the most highly rated places to stay in the area. Booking.com

Strasbourg

Hotel Chateau de L'Ile and Spa. Part of the Grandes Etapes Françaises group, this 19th century house is situated in Ostwald, just a few miles to the south west of Strasbourg’s centre. Expedia | TripAdvisor

Cour Du Corbeau. Curious titles such as “Zum Rappen” and “Courtyard of the Crow” can only be applied to somewhere of great age. And so it is with this exquisite example of Alsatian timber-frame architecture. Records show its existence in 1528, but parts of the property may be even older. As such, it has played host to a few historic European notables, including kings, emperors, and dukes. Booking.com

Hotel Beaucour.
Attractive half-timbered building from the 18th century close to the centre of the city. Expedia | TripAdvisor

Hotel Cardinal de Rohan. 17th century hotel close to the city’s cathedral. LateRooms

Best Western Hôtel de l'Europe. They say that the likes of Voltaire and Goethe once stayed here. That, though, is unsurprising given that this old inn has been a landmark in Strasbourg for many centuries. Check availability through Booking.com

Thann

Hotel du Parc. Dating from the 19th century, Hotel du Parc certainly isn’t the oldest place offering accommodation in Alsace, but it does possess an illustrious guest list which includes French military and political icons such as de Gaulle and Petain. Booking.com

Turckheim

Hotel des Deux Clefs. This extremely pretty building dates back to the 15th century and, in 1540 is recorded as being known as the ‘Statthof zum Schwartzen Adler’. As one might expect, it’s welcomed many travellers visiting the medieval town of Turckheim during its time, Charles de Gaulle amongst some of the more internationally famous. Booking.com

Historic Hotels, Chateaux and Inns in Lorraine

Argancy Rugy

La Bergerie. A 16th century manor house, La Bergerie benefits from a village location but is only a short drive from Metz. TripAdvisor

Dieuze

Chateau d’Alteville. A house with connections to Napoleon himself (it was the residence of one of his Generals), Chateau d’Alteville is more ‘subtle’ than ‘grand’ as French chateaux go. Booking.com

Gerardmer

Le Grand Hotel et le Chalet. A famous 19th century hotel in the “Pearl of the Vosges” whose former guests are said to have included Napoleon III. Expedia

Les Monthairons

Hostellerie Du Château Des Monthairons. Having been built during the 1850’s, this particular building certainly isn’t anywhere as old as the majority of chateaux listed on the site. But what it lacks in age it certainly makes up for in classic architectural grandeur. Booking.com

Metz

La Citadelle. This is certainly one of the more unusual hotels in France – a fortified structure built in 1559. Its conversion into four star accommodation has resulted in a partly contemporary ambience, but it is certainly worthy of its place in the National Historical Register. Booking.com

Nancy

Logis de Guise. Once a ‘seigneurial’ house, Logis de Guise dates from the mid 18th century and was built by the Marquis de Jouffroy and Countess de Bressey. Interestingly, however, the foundations of the structure are on those of an earlier abbey. Booking.com

Vigneulles-lès-Hattonchâtel

Hattonchatel Chateau. Beautifully restored to maintain its 16th century charm (the place was all but destroyed by Cardinal Richelieu in 1634) Hattonchatel Chateau is certainly full of period detail. Booking.com

Are you aware of any historic and romantic hotels in Alsace or Lorraine? If so, please get in touch and let us know. Period boutique hotels, countryside bed & breakfasts, chateaux, traditional inns - all types of accommodation are eligible providing they have a significant degree of heritage value. However, in all cases the level of hospitality and quality of service should be excellent. We are particularly keen to learn of period hotels in Strasbourg, Nancy and Metz (and other popular visitor destinations in both regions). Thank you for visiting.
